1. Know your stone

Ask for the stone name, finish and any treatment already applied. Keep the care instructions with your purchase record.

Marble can get dull marks from acids. A dull patch may be a damaged finish rather than dirt. Harder scrubbing may make it worse.

2. Keep cleaning gentle

Use a cleaner suitable for your stone and follow its label. A neutral stone cleaner is a common choice. Use a soft cloth or mop. Rinse and dry as directed.

Remove loose sand and grit gently. Safe, non-slip entrance mats can help keep dirt off the floor.

3. Take care with spills

Blot spills quickly with a soft cloth. Do not spread them across the surface. Keep vinegar, lemon-based cleaners and strong toilet cleaners away from acid-sensitive stone.

Use coasters and suitable protective mats. Ask for advice before trying a strong treatment on a stubborn mark.

4. Ask about protection

Some stone may benefit from a treatment that reduces staining. Ask whether it is needed and when it should be checked again.

A sealer does not make stone stain-proof and does not stop acid marks. Follow advice for the actual stone and product.
