1. Bring a simple plan

Take room photos, a rough sketch and approximate measurements. Say whether the stone is for a floor, wall, stairs or kitchen counter. Mention any wet or outdoor areas.

Ask your builder or installer to check the final measurements before ordering.

2. Look at more than one piece

Compare several pieces together. Check their colour, pattern, thickness and finish. A phone photo can change how a colour looks.

Ask which pieces will be supplied. Do not choose a large area from one small sample alone.

3. Ask what is included

Ask how the material is measured and what the price covers. Confirm any cutting, transport or other work separately. Do not assume these are included.

Write down the agreed material, quantity, finish, price and delivery details. A short written note helps avoid confusion.

4. Check the practical details

Discuss edges, joints and support with your installer. The extra stone needed for cutting depends on the room and layout. One fixed allowance will not suit every job.

For wet walking areas or stairs, ask your installer to check the finish and slip risk. A shiny sample alone does not prove that a surface is suitable.

Take this with you

Bring your plan. Check the pieces. Write down what is included.

General educational guidance. Discuss the actual material, finish and installation with a suitable supplier or installer for your project.
